Appearance:

Ah. Okay, so well...in his natural state, he is little more than a shapeless form of gas-like substance. He is literally made of magic, so he has no form and simply mingled with the rest of the essence in "The Other Place" and only began to take form, consciousness, when his name was uncovered and a magician summoned him. It ripped his essence from the whole and sucked him to Earth.

On Earth, he can assume any form he wants. Literally. He can be an ox, a bear, a rabbit, a chest of drawers, a baseball, a fork....so, pinning it down is hard.

However, his favourite and usual form is that of a small, Egyptian boy. Usually Bartimaeus is found in this form and he is always exactly the same in it. Its so detailed to the point many suspect, upon seeing him (if they know hes not actually human) that he is replicating someone he knew and the completely exact replication includes any flaws the boy had - pointing to a deep love of him with no attempts at stylization or making him better looking.

In Ptolemy's guise, Bartimaeus usally wears traditional Ancient Egyptian clothing. Bare chest, with a bleached skirt. He sometimes adds sandals and a necklace denoting rank; but other than that, the look is very simple.

'He' can also quite as easily assume 'she' form as well.

Personality:

'Sarcastic', 'witty', 'magnificent', 'wonderfully resourceful' and .................... 'complete coward' are all very choice words to describe Bartimaeus. He is very quick in his mind and rather cunning; able to outwit much, much more powerful entities (such as marids, afrits and even some higher ranking entities than that) and keep himself alive.

His first instinct is always to run and save his life. Of course, he usually is constrained by the binding spell of the summoning magician and is forced to obey their will - but he finds ways of bending their words to allow him to escape almost certain death at every turn.

He forces, by being so wily, his masters to spend a long time worrying about their orders in case there is any possible way Bartimaeus can twist it back on them and he will do so, gleefully.

He is also a complete joker and likes to do things like arrive in a sulpherous cloud covered in extra tentacles and such to creep out and stink out the summoning magician while mocking their choice in tie.

Abilities/Strengths:

Bartimaeus has the innate ability to do magic, he can cast shields, detonations and shapeshift. He also exists on seven planes of existance and only those either from "The Other Place" of high enough rank or magicians with special contacts can see his true (seventh level) form. This means the inhabitants of Template will only be able to see whichever form he chooses to wear on first through sixth (or less if hes being lazy) levels. If he decides to wear the form of Ptolemy or be a billy goat - thats what they will see.

He actually has to shapeshift as if he stays in one form for a long amount of time, it will start to hurt. The transormation relieves the pain and then he can either stay in new guise or go back to the other one at will.

He is very cunning and smart as well as resourceful and will always think on his feet..if he happens to have feet at the time.

Weaknesses:

Silver, Ptolemy, Kitty and Nathaniel/John are Bartimaeus' weaknesses. The people named are people he grew to love and actually wanted to protect. Ptolemy much more so than the other two at first as he was the first and only magician to ever show him kindness. Ptolemy gave him free reign and so, he is the one person who Bartimaeus truly loved and would willingly go against any kind of traditional djinni/magician relationship for and he was even willing to die for him - something unheard of before or after.

Kitty was a commoner and it was only after she made a huge sacrifice to show trust in Bartimaeus - real trust - that she managed to put herself in a situation similar to Ptolemy's, even if his love for her would never be as complete, he still would go out of his way to help the girl.

Nathaniel/John is a boy Bartimaeus got along with as long as he was allowed to insult him at every possible opportunity and Bartimaeus saw in him the potential to become more than the other magicians, to be better. However, he did not fulfil this potential and Bartimaeus, for a long time, resented the boy and wished he could break free of his bonds and return to the Other Place. After a certain incident, however, Nathaniel took a place alongside Kitty and Ptolemy in Bartimaeus' heart.

Lastly, silver. Anything silver near Bartimaeus will literally eat away at his essence. Cold iron is similar but nowhere near as bad. Bartimaeus will reel away from anything even containing trace amounts of silver as it will cause him intense pain and rob him of most of his powers for a time.

History:

(I have been vague towards the end to avoid massive spoilers, but I can provide more detailed information if it is needed)

Bartimaeus' name was first uncovered by a magician in Ancient Sumer in 3000 B.C. and over a thousand years of the Empire served many magicians, none of whom he cared about one jot and in fact, resented for them calling him to this Plane of Existance and forcing him into servitude and keeping him from the energies of The Other Place.

After this, he is known to have served the empires of Prague, the Babylonians, the Egyptians, the British, the Native Americans, and the people of the Asian Steppes amongst others he once again, didn't care about enough to name. The ones he does name are usually because something of note happened to him there.

One day, he found himself summoned and that day changed the course of Bartimaeus' life forever. He was summoned by a young boy and was surprised to find he could not scare him at all nor trick him out of his protective pentacle. Bartimaeus, along with three others were the djinni of Ptolemy, a cousin of the Egyptian Prince and they were shocked to discover they were summoned not for the mage's own greed, but for him to learn more about them, what they were - where they came from. They actually fought for him as he bestowed upon them two gifts no magician ever had for a demon/djinni before. The first was the ability to come and go as they pleased, without bonds, withoug anti-demon spells, without even the protective pentacles. This caused them to love him as no demon had a magician before.

Secondly, he allowed them free passage over the Earth, so they could see it for themselves without being constrained by a mission given them. All of this combined and when Ptolemy was fourteen, the Crown Prince felt threatened by Ptolemy (even though the boy had never shown any interest in wresting the Crown) and sent legions after them. The four djinni did something unprecedented and stayed willingly to protect their master. Affa died first, then Penrenutet and Teti were killed in the fight and Bartimaeus threw up a shield, changed into a bird and snatched Ptolemy away. It wasn't enough, however and Ptolemy was ambushed. Bartimaeus was ready to die for him, too - but Ptolemy gave him a third and final gift. Using his last few moments of life; he banished Bartimaeus from Earth and as he dissipated and went back, safely, to The Other Place, he saw Ptolemy die.

After this, whenever he was summoned, he stayed in the guise of Ptolemy as a homage to the one boy he'd loved, even saying "It's two thousand, one hundred and twenty-nine years since Ptolemy died. He was fourteen. Eight world empires have risen up and fallen away since that day, and I still carry his face..." to Kitty when she uncovers the secret of his favoured guise as a way of explaining the way he felt.

All of his following masters were as unremarkable or unliked as any of his others barring Ptolemy and one day, he materialized to find himself in a pentacle with yet another young boy inside. This one was not like Ptolemy, though - he wanted vengeance against a man who had belittled and hurt him and through a series of events, Bartimaeus uncovered "John Mandrake" as the phony name all magicians used (as true, birth names, were power) and that his real name was "Nathaniel".

This gave Bartimaeus power and Nat could not use punishment magicks against him and the two held each other at an impasse. If Bartimaeus told another magician John's true name, he'd be trapped inside a tiny silver prison at the bottom of the Thames River forever in pain due to a binding spell and if John used punishment magic, Bartimaeus could use the power of the name to turn it right back on him.

Thus, the two were forced to work together and as they did so, they uncovered a huge treasonous plot against the Prime Minister and set about trying to prevent the bloody coup.

Their mission complete, Nat dismissed Bartimaeus with the promise that he'd never be summoned again. He lied.

He summoned Bartimaeus twice more and they worked together against golems, insane afrits and possessed magicians who had had the stupid notion to allow the demons into their bodies and were thus killed and the demons roamed free.

Finally, the main conspirator was revealed and had tried to summon into himself one of the most powerful entities in existance, Nouda. Knowing they'd likely not survive, Kitty, Nathaniel and Bartimaeus stood against it and fought back with everything they had.

With the final attack unleashed, Bartimaeus found himself blasted hard enough to send him through The Other Place (where he picked up enough essence to make himself whole again after the debilitating effects of being on Earth) and ended up in Template, confused.
